Digital Signature Certificate (DSC)

Secure Your Digital Identity with Cryptographically Encrypted Class 3 DSC

A Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) is the electronic equivalent of a physical signature, issued by government-recognized Certifying Authorities (CAs) under the Information Technology Act, 2000.

It utilizes advanced asymmetric public-key cryptography to authenticate electronic documents, ensuring complete data integrity, confidentiality, and legal non-repudiation.

1. Core Advantages of a Digital Signature Certificate

High Security & Tamper Proofing: Any modification to a digitally signed document immediately invalidates the signature, protecting against fraud.

Time & Cost Efficiency: Eliminates the need for physical printing, manual signing, courier transit, and physical archiving of official documents.

Statutory Legal Validity: Validated as legally binding evidence in courts of law under Section 5 of the Information Technology Act.

2. Importance for Statutory Government Compliance

Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA): Mandatory for directors, company secretaries, and partners for signing e-Forms, incorporation deeds, and annual ROC returns.

Income Tax & GST Portals: Essential for tax audit reports, ITR-6/ITR-7 filings, GST refund claims, and responding to tax department notices.

EPFO & E-Tendering: Required for employers signing monthly EPF challans and for businesses participating in government e-procurement tenders.

3. Types and Classes of DSC

Class 3 DSC (Highest Security Standard): Currently the only active class of DSC issued in India, mandatory for both individual statutory filings and high-security e-tendering.

Sign DSC: Used exclusively for verifying user identity and signing PDF documents or online portals.

Sign & Encrypt DSC: Provides dual functionality—signing documents and encrypting confidential bid data during online tender submissions.

4. Step-by-Step Online DSC Issuance Procedure

Step 1 - Application & e-KYC: Submit online application through a Certifying Authority (such as eMudhra, Capricorn, or Sify) using Aadhaar paperless offline e-KYC or PAN e-KYC.

Step 2 - Mobile OTP Verification: Verify the registered applicant mobile number via OTP authentication.

Step 3 - Video Verification (Video KYC): Record a 20-second live video confirmation showing original PAN and Aadhaar documents.

Step 4 - Certificate Download onto USB Token: Once approved, the cryptographic certificate is downloaded securely into a FIPS 140-2 Level 2 certified USB token (e.g., ePass2003 or WatchData).

5. Mandatory Documents Required for DSC

Copy of applicant's PAN Card (mandatory for Indian nationals).

Address proof (Aadhaar Card / Voter ID / Passport / Driving License).

Passport-size digital photograph of the applicant.

Authorization letter on company letterhead (if applying for an organizational/corporate DSC).

6. Checking DSC Validity and USB Token Safety

DSC certificates are typically issued with a validity period of 1 year, 2 years, or 3 years.

Users can check active certificate expiration dates at any time using token manager software or by viewing digital signature properties in Adobe Acrobat.

Conclusion:

Equipping your directors and executives with Class 3 DSCs ensures uninterrupted, legally binding digital compliance across all government portals.
